The IMD has announced dry weather conditions across Tamil Nadu until January 21 following monsoon withdrawal.

Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday formally announced the withdrawal of the Northeast Monsoon from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and adjoining parts of South India, marking the end of the region’s primary rainy season.
According to the IMD, dry weather conditions are likely to prevail across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from Monday until January 21.
During this period, early morning fog or mist may occur at one or two isolated places, particularly during pre-dawn hours, potentially affecting visibility in low-lying and inland areas.
The weather department said there will be little change in minimum temperatures across the region. However, night temperatures are expected to remain near normal or slightly below normal, bringing relatively cooler early mornings and evenings.
Looking ahead, the IMD has forecast a change in the weather from January 23 to January 25. Light to moderate rainfall is likely at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, while other areas may continue to experience dry conditions. These showers are expected to provide brief relief from the prevailing dry spell.
A specific fog warning has been issued for hilly regions. The Nilgiris district and the Kodaikanal hill ranges in Dindigul district may experience fog during the night and early morning hours today and tomorrow, and motorists have been advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility.
For Chennai and its suburbs, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies, with light fog at one or two places during the early morning hours. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 30 to 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may range between 20 and 21 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a marine warning for fishermen in the south-western Bay of Bengal. Strong winds with speeds of 35 to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph at times, are likely over parts of the region. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into these sea areas.
