The Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Sunburn Festival, scheduled to take place later this year, has been opposed by several villages in South Goa district. These villages have adopted resolutions opposing the festival citing concerns that it promotes drug culture. 

In contrast, stakeholders in the tourism industry have expressed support for the festival, highlighting its potential to generate revenue for the state.

During their Gram Sabha meetings on Sunday, seven villages in South Goa -- Chicalim, Carmona, Nuvem, Varca, Sarzora, Chinchinim, and Camorlim -- passed resolutions declining permission for the festival. 

The resolutions alleged that the Sunburn Festival fuels drug culture, causes traffic congestion, and creates problems for locals.

Traditionally held in North Goa, the festival is expected to take place in South Goa this year. However, state Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte stated that the organizers have yet to apply for permission, and any decision regarding the festival will be made after receiving their application.

The Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), an umbrella organization representing tourism stakeholders, has expressed support for the festival, emphasizing its potential to generate revenue of approximately Rs 200 crore. TTAG president Jack Sukhija noted that a well-organized festival can unlock economic value and benefit local communities, provided proper planning and infrastructure are in place.

Sanjay Amonkar, director general of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted the significant contribution of Sunburn to North Goa's tourism economy, with local businesses being among the primary beneficiaries of such festivals.
