The highly anticipated Tamil edition of the globally popular 'Indian Idol' franchise is set to introduce a new platform for aspiring singers, with acclaimed artistes Andrea Jeremiah, Benny Dayal and Karthik joining the judging panel for its inaugural season.

Titled 'Tamil Idol', the musical reality show will bring together three prominent voices from the Tamil music industry, who will mentor contestants, evaluate their performances and help identify emerging talent from across the state. The show will be guided by music maestro AR Rahman, adding another major name to the project.

The first round of auditions will be held in Chennai on August 23. Singers between 14 and 30 years old can audition at Velammal Vidyalaya Annexure in Mel Ayanambakkam. The show will be available to stream on Sony Vizha and SonyLIV.

Andrea Jeremiah: The versatile performer

Actress and singer Andrea Jeremiah will bring her experience as both a performer and recording artiste to the panel. Known for her work across acting and music, Andrea is expected to offer contestants a perspective shaped by her own journey in the industry.

Speaking about the show, Andrea highlighted the wealth of musical talent across Tamil Nadu and the importance of giving emerging singers a platform.

“Music has always been an integral part of who we are as Tamilians, and I believe some of the most extraordinary voices are waiting to be discovered across the state. What excites me about 'Tamil Idol' is the opportunity to meet singers from different backgrounds, with different influences and stories, and watch them bring their individuality to the stage. I am really looking forward to this journey and to being part of a platform that gives these voices the opportunity to be heard, nurtured, and celebrated.”

Benny Dayal: A familiar face to the Idol franchise

Playback singer Benny Dayal joins 'Tamil Idol' with previous experience of the 'Indian Idol' format. Having appeared as part of the Hindi edition on multiple occasions, Dayal said the experience of discovering singers from different parts of the country has always stood out to him.

His connection with Chennai also makes the Tamil edition particularly significant for the singer. Dayal studied in the city, spent nearly a decade living there and developed his career in Tamil music.

“I have had the opportunity to be part of the 'Hindi Idol' journey multiple times, and every time I walked onto that stage, I was blown away by the incredible talent that came forward. You realise that there are so many voices across the country with stories, dreams and an extraordinary musical instinct. To now be part of 'Tamil Idol' and have the opportunity to discover and work with talent from Tamil Nadu is something I am genuinely excited about. I have studied in Chennai, lived here for almost 10 years and built my career in Tamil music. So, to see the journey of Tamil music and the city evolve from then to now makes being part of 'Tamil Idol' even more special. I feel very happy and grateful to be part of this journey, and I cannot wait to see what the next generation of singers brings to the stage. This is going to be a very special journey.”

Karthik: Looking beyond the performance

Playback singer Karthik will complete the judging trio. With his extensive experience in Tamil music, he said the show could uncover singers capable of making a lasting impression.

For Karthik, the role of a judge goes beyond assessing a contestant’s immediate performance. He hopes to identify potential and help aspiring artistes understand and develop their abilities.

“Tamil Nadu has such a deep and diverse musical culture, and I am certain that 'Tamil Idol' is going to uncover voices that will surprise and inspire us. For me, the most exciting part of being a judge is not just listening to a great singer but recognizing potential and helping an artiste discover what they are truly capable of. With A.R. Rahman Sir guiding this journey, we have a wonderful opportunity to create a platform where new talent can really flourish. I cannot wait to hear what Tamil Nadu has to offer.”

With Andrea Jeremiah, Benny Dayal and Karthik on the judging panel and AR Rahman leading the musical journey, 'Tamil Idol' is set to begin its search for the next generation of Tamil singing talent.
