Starlink partners with UIDAI for faster Aadhaar-based signup, boosting digital access across India

New Delhi: Elon Musk’s satellite broadband venture, Starlink, is preparing to roll out its services across India, following a significant partnership with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The collaboration will see Aadhaar-based e-KYC integrated into Starlink’s onboarding process, offering customers a faster, paperless, and regulation-compliant way to get connected.
Swift and streamlined sign-ups
Traditionally, signing up for broadband services in India has meant lengthy forms and prolonged verification processes. Starlink aims to change this narrative. Leveraging Aadhaar’s digital identity infrastructure, the new system will allow users to complete registration within minutes. Verification will be conducted using biometric and facial recognition technology, ensuring both security and accuracy.
Importantly, Aadhaar-based e-KYC will be strictly voluntary and conducted only with the customer’s consent, in line with UIDAI’s existing protocols. This approach balances efficiency with user privacy and transparency.
Aligning with Indian regulatory norms
According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the integration of Aadhaar e-KYC will also help Starlink meet India's regulatory standards more effectively. By eliminating paperwork and reducing administrative delays, the system will make it easier for households, businesses, and institutions to access high-speed satellite internet without bureaucratic hurdles.
Strengthening India’s digital infrastructure
The move also showcases the adaptability and strength of India’s Aadhaar ecosystem, which continues to play a key role in enabling digital innovation. Government officials have highlighted three core takeaways from this initiative:
Aadhaar empowers cutting-edge services like satellite broadband to innovate at scale.
It reflects India’s ability to integrate domestic digital systems with global technologies.
The system has been officially recognised, with Starlink now authorised as a Sub-Authentication User Agency (Sub-AUA) and Sub-eKYC User Agency (Sub-KUA) under UIDAI.
The combination of Starlink’s satellite capabilities with Aadhaar’s robust verification system is expected to bolster India’s digital outreach, particularly in underserved rural and remote regions. The partnership marks a pivotal step in bridging the digital divide and reinforcing India’s position as a leader in digital identity and connectivity.
