Srinagar: Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir stepped up their action against the banned Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday, with Srinagar Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducting a joint operation and hotel verification drive in the Lal Chowk area. The initiative formed part of a broader set of coordinated searches across several districts aimed at individuals and organisations allegedly linked to the proscribed outfit.

According to Srinagar Police, multiple residential premises and institutional locations were searched as part of the operation. Raids were conducted at the homes of Umar Sultan Guru, Mohd Abdullah Wani (son of the late Mohd Akber Wani), Gh. Mohd Bhat, Haji Mohammad Ramzan Lone, Shahid Zahgeer, Mohd Ramzan Naik, Bashir Ahmad Lone, Peer Giyas Ud Din and Manzoor Ahmad of Nowgam Chowk.

Search teams also visited several establishments, including Jamiat-ul-Banaat, Kashmir University, Umer Colony (Lal Bazar), Rahat Manzil (JK Yateem Khana), Bagh-i-Nand Singh in Chattabal, Chinar Publication Trust and Al-Kousar Book Shop in Maisuma.

In Handwara, police acted on credible intelligence inputs and carried out a raid at the Jamia Islamia Institute in Waripora. Officials stated that the operation was linked to investigations into suspected unlawful activities and potential connections to banned groups. Multiple electronic devices were recovered during the search and sent for forensic examination to determine digital usage and verify any affiliation with Jamaat-e-Islami.

Authorities emphasised that the operation followed all legal procedures and reaffirmed their commitment to transparency. A senior police official said that Handwara Police would continue to take firm action against individuals or entities involved in unlawful or anti-national activities, adding that accountability remained a guiding principle in the ongoing probe.

The crackdown is part of a series of intensified actions taken across the Kashmir Valley this month. Earlier, Shopian Police conducted coordinated searches at several locations targeting individuals linked to Jamaat-e-Islami, which remains proscribed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). On 12 November, Anantnag Police had also conducted raids across the district as part of the broader effort to monitor and restrict activities associated with the banned outfit.

The series of operations reflect continued efforts by security agencies to track, investigate and dismantle networks allegedly connected with Jamaat-e-Islami, with authorities maintaining that investigations across all districts remain active.
