Delhi: A student from Daulat Ram College has alleged that she was stopped from going on stage to felicitate Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) after being told that her sleeveless dress was not appropriate.

Allegation shared in social media video

The student made the allegation in a video posted on social media, stating that she had attended a mock Parliament session organised by SRCC on Sunday, where Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya was the chief guest.

She claimed she was asked to felicitate the minister during the event but was later prevented from doing so.

Ministry response on incident

An official from the Ministry of Youth Affairs said that the student was not stopped by any ministry official, but by a college authority.

The official clarified that she was not assigned to felicitate the minister. According to the ministry, she had already been on the dais twice during the event.

“She was not designated to felicitate the minister. She had simply been stopped by the administration of the institution as she had already been on the dais twice before,” the ministry official said.

The official also stated that the student had earlier presented the Nari Shakti Bill as the Women and Child Development Minister during the mock Parliament session.

Student’s version of events

In her video shared on Monday, the student said she felt humiliated by the incident.

“This was a purely women’s conference, meaning all the portfolios were assigned to women,” she said.

She further stated that she was originally asked to felicitate Mandaviya, who attended the event as chief guest.

“However, when the ministry officials saw me, they said that I could not felicitate him as I was wearing sleeveless. I felt disgusted and embarrassed when I heard this, as this was told to me in front of everyone,” she alleged in the video.

College response and counter view

Shri Ram College of Commerce did not respond to queries regarding the incident.

However, a student from SRCC, who claimed to have been present at the event, said they did not witness any objection being raised over the student’s attire.

“What she claimed in the video seems unlikely as the event went on smoothly, without any hiccups. She had indeed been on stage a couple of times already and we are not aware of anyone commenting on her attire,” the student said.
