New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital after completing 21 days of his hunger strike, with doctors saying he is currently stable but remains weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration.

In its first official medical update after Wangchuk's admission, Safdarjung Hospital said he was brought to the government facility at 7.40 am on Saturday for specialised medical care.

‘Mr Sonam Wangchuk was received and admitted at Safdarjung Hospital for required health care at 7.40 am today. He is weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration. Although he is currently stable, he requires continuous observation, monitoring and treatment to restore his body parameters,’ the hospital said in a statement.

According to sources, a dedicated team comprising two doctors and two paramedics has been assigned to monitor Wangchuk's condition round the clock.

Delhi Police said Wangchuk was shifted from the Jantar Mantar protest site to the hospital following medical advice and in compliance with directions from the Delhi High Court, after concerns grew over his deteriorating health.

Before his transfer, doctors from the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital examined the activist at the protest venue. Sources said the medical team recommended immediate hospitalisation following the assessment.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

Meanwhile, a video from Safdarjung Hospital showed Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, in a verbal exchange with hospital staff after she was reportedly not allowed to carry her mobile phone inside the ward.

She was also heard questioning why the family had not been provided with copies of Wangchuk's medical reports.
