Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday criticised the Delhi Police for issuing him a notice in the National Herald case, calling the move “harassment”. The notice from the Economic Offences Wing seeks financial and transactional details from him, stating that he is believed to possess “vital information” related to the ongoing investigation.

Shivakumar questioned the need for a fresh police probe when the Enforcement Directorate has already completed its investigation and filed a chargesheet. He said both he and his brother, former MP D K Suresh, had provided all required information to the ED, and maintained that transactions linked to the National Herald and Young India were transparent and fully documented.

The notice, dated 29 November, directs him to appear or provide the requested details by 19 December. Shivakumar said he would assess the legal implications before responding, adding that the move appeared to increase pressure on senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

He argued that the funds in question belonged to party members and had been given openly after paying taxes. According to him, the new notice attempts to create confusion despite an existing PMLA case and a filed chargesheet. He said he had only recently received the summons and was still examining its contents.

The EOW case, registered on 3 October, names Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi among others. Shivakumar said the ED’s previous questioning and the completed chargesheet made another round of enquiries unnecessary. He described the latest notice as politically motivated and said he believed it was intended to cause discomfort to Congress leadership.

Shivakumar reiterated that he and his brother had complied fully with earlier investigations and questioned what more could be sought beyond what had already been submitted. He maintained that the contributions to party-linked institutions were lawful, documented and openly made by party members.
