The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that shallow to moderate fog is expected during the early morning hours of December 14 and 15 in Delhi, as winter conditions begin to affect visibility across north India.

According to the IMD, the sky in Delhi will remain partly cloudy for the next 48 hours starting December 13. Mist or haze is likely to develop on Saturday night, followed by foggy conditions in the morning on the next two days.

The weather department said the maximum temperature in the national capital is expected to range between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature could drop to around 8 degrees Celsius.

With air quality worsening and visibility dropping in the early morning hours, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport issued an advisory to passengers. The airport said that low visibility procedures are currently in place and advised travellers to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates.

A dense layer of fog was seen across parts of Delhi on Saturday morning, significantly reducing visibility. SpiceJet also issued a travel advisory, warning passengers that flights may be affected due to poor visibility at several airports.

In posts on social media platform X, the airline said that flight operations could be impacted in Bengaluru, and later added that poor visibility was also affecting airports in Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Amritsar, and Darbhanga on December 13.

Passengers travelling through these airports were advised to stay updated on their flight status.

Earlier, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) had said it is taking steps to minimise flight disruptions during the winter fog season. The airport has deployed advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems to help manage operations during low visibility.

DIAL said its Airport Predictive Operations Centre will use real-time data and weather forecasting models to anticipate disruptions and manage flight movements more efficiently.

With fog conditions expected to continue over the weekend, passengers are advised to plan their travel accordingly and stay in touch with airlines for real-time updates.
