Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for four districts in Tamil Nadu on Saturday. The districts expected to experience significant downpours include Theni, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Madurai.
In light of this weather alert, a holiday has been announced for all government, aided, and private schools in these areas. The District Collectors of Tenkasi and Thoothukudi have instructed schools not to hold even special classes. Similarly, the Madurai District Collector has declared a holiday for all schools, and Theni District has followed suit.

The RMC has also predicted rain for additional districts, including Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, and Tirunelveli. Currently, heavy rains are affecting the western regions of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Coimbatore and Tiruppur, where significant waterlogging has been reported.
The intense rainfall has impacted several areas, including Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi, Erode, Namakkal, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Mayiladuthurai. In Sellur, heavy rains on Wednesday and Thursday caused severe flooding. The Panthalkudi canal, which channels overflow water from the Sellur tank to the Vaigai River, has breached its banks at multiple points, leading to widespread inundation.
Erode district has also seen considerable rainfall, resulting in waterlogging on main roads and in residential neighbourhoods. Many homes in Erode city have been flooded, and railway tunnels at Vendipalayam are completely submerged, leaving vehicles stranded. Suburban areas like Modakurichi and Kavindapadi have also been heavily affected.
Since the northeast monsoon began on October 15, parts of Tamil Nadu have experienced excessive rainfall, leading to widespread flooding in the southern and western regions of the state. The weather department has issued a warning for thunderstorms with lightning in isolated areas across Tamil Nadu over the next 24 hours.
