Uttar Pradesh: The Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Zafar Ali, the chief of Jama Masjid Sadar and Shahi Mosque Committee, on Sunday following questioning in connection with the November 24 Sambhal violence. The violence, which broke out over an ASI-led survey of a Mughal-era mosque, resulted in multiple casualties, injuries, and widespread unrest.

Authorities in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, have placed the region on high alert after the arrest of Jama Masjid Sadar and Shahi Mosque Committee president Zafar Ali in connection with the November 24 violence that erupted during protests over a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque. Ali’s lawyer has announced that a bail plea will be filed in the session court on Monday.

Superintendent of Police KK Bishnoi confirmed the arrest, stating that Ali has been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, including charges of criminal conspiracy. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has been probing the case, took Ali into custody for questioning before formally arresting him.

Speaking to reporters, Ali denied the allegations, asserting, "I did not incite violence." His supporters staged a protest demanding his release, adding to the tensions in the region.

Legal proceedings and bail plea

Ali was produced before the Chandausi court, after which he was transferred to Moradabad Jail. His lawyer, Vinod Kumar Singh, said that a bail request was made but was rejected by the magistrate, as the court does not have jurisdiction over the case. Singh confirmed that a bail plea will now be filed in the session court on Monday.

“The incident took place on November 24, but Zafar Ali’s statement was recorded on November 25, meaning the charges against him are not applicable. He was not even present at the scene of the incident. This action is unjust,” said Singh.
