Srinagar: A rusted mortar shell was discovered on Saturday in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir during the excavation of a drain, officials reported. Labourers working near an educational institute in the town spotted the shell at around 10 am and immediately informed local authorities.

Police personnel from the area’s jurisdiction quickly cordoned off the site to ensure public safety. A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) team was called in to assess and neutralise the high-grade explosive. Officials confirmed that efforts to safely defuse the shell are ongoing, and the area remains under strict surveillance until the operation is completed.

The discovery has prompted heightened caution in the vicinity, with authorities urging residents to avoid the site until the explosive has been fully neutralised.
