Kolkata: A recent report submitted by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has cast doubt on the initial findings regarding the "scene of the crime" in the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.

The body of the victim, a junior doctor, was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College on the morning of August 9. Initially, both the Kolkata Police and later the CBI considered the seminar hall to be the crime scene and conducted investigations accordingly. However, the CFSL’s forensic report submitted to the CBI now challenges this assumption.

Speculations about a misleading crime scene

According to sources familiar with the development, the CFSL report states that there was no evidence of a struggle or scuffle within the seminar room, which raises significant questions about whether the seminar hall was, in fact, the actual location of the crime.

The CFSL report has reinforced suspicions raised by some members of the medical community from the outset of the investigation. Many have speculated that the crime scene was elsewhere, and the victim’s body was later moved to the seminar hall to mislead the investigation. The CFSL’s findings seem to align with these concerns.

The investigation process so far

During the initial investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police, authorities collected a total of 40 items from the seminar hall where the body was found. After the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation, several of these items were sent to the CFSL for further examination.

On August 14, a team of CFSL experts physically inspected the seminar hall, purported to be the crime scene. The subsequent forensic analysis of the items recovered and the scene itself led to the CFSL’s report, which now raises serious doubts about the actual location of the crime.

The CBI is expected to review the new findings as the investigation continues.
