In a controversial move, a village panchayat in Jalore district, Rajasthan, has banned daughters-in-law and young women from using camera-enabled mobile phones in 15 villages, effective January 26, 2026.
Women will now be allowed only basic keypad phones and restricted from carrying phones to social events.

The Sundhamata Patti panchayat, predominantly inhabited by the Chaudhary community, passed the resolution during a meeting chaired by Sujanram Chaudhary, president of the 14 pattis. The rule prohibits women from carrying smartphones to public gatherings, weddings, social events, or neighbours’ houses. School-going girls may use phones for educational purposes but only at home.
Reasoning behind the decision
Panchayat leaders argued that excessive smartphone use by women encourages children to handle phones, which could affect their eyesight. Officials stated that the restriction is meant to prioritise family routines and children’s well-being. Videos explaining the ban have gone viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism for limiting women’s access to modern technology.
The ban will be implemented in 15 villages, including Gasipur, Pavali, Kalda, Manojiyawas, Rajikawas, Dattalawas, Rajpura, Kodi, Sidrodi, Aldi, Ropsi, Khanadeval, Savidhar, Hatmi Ki Dhani, and Khanpur in the Bhinmal region. Women are expected to comply with the new rule from January 26, 2026.
