Pune: Educational institutions across Pune district have been ordered to close on Monday following a 'Red Alert' from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of extremely heavy rainfall. The district administration implemented the holiday as a safety precaution for students.

The Pune Municipal Corporation urged residents via social media to remain indoors unless travel is essential. Citizens were also advised to avoid rivers, streams, and other high-risk areas and to adhere strictly to guidance provided by local authorities.

In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) similarly announced the closure of all government, private, and civic-run schools and colleges on 6 July, citing an 'orange alert' for heavy rain and gale-force winds.

"In view of this forecast and keeping the safety of students in mind, a holiday has been declared on Monday, July 6, 2026, for all government, private, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools and colleges in Mumbai," the BMC said in a statement. The corporation confirmed, however, that both government and private workplaces will continue to operate as scheduled.

Neighbouring regions have also taken action. Thane District Collector Shrikrishnath Panchal confirmed that all primary and secondary schools, alongside Anganwadis and Balwadis, are to remain shut on Monday.

Furthermore, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has directed all schools to close for the day due to the persistent downpour. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde issued a joint appeal for citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay within their homes.
