Seven years after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, India remembers the 40 CRPF personnel who lost their lives, with tributes and heightened security marking the solemn day.

New Delhi: Today marks the seventh anniversary of the horrific 2019 Pulwama terror attack, one of the deadliest assaults on Indian security forces in recent history.
On this grim day, the nation pays homage to the 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who lost their lives in a suicide bombing that shook India and intensified its discourse on national security and counter-terrorism.

The Pulwama attack, which unfolded on February 14, 2019, occurred when a vehicle-borne suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a convoy of CRPF personnel travelling along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the Lethpora area of Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir.
The blast instantly killed 40 personnel and injured dozens more, leaving a deep scar on the nation and its security apparatus.
The Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) claimed responsibility for the strike, which triggered a major military and diplomatic standoff between India and Pakistan.
In the run-up to today’s anniversary, security agencies have bolstered vigilance in sensitive regions. Security forces on Friday conducted surprise checks in the Lal Chowk area of Srinagar ahead of the seventh anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama suicide attack that left 40 CRPF personnel dead, officials said.
Teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police carried out surprise checks, searched hotels, and verified the identification cards of pedestrians and visitors in the commercial hub as part of preventive measures aimed at thwarting any security threats.
Across the country, tributes poured in from political leaders, local communities, and citizens remembering the ultimate sacrifice of the martyrs.
Commemorative events, candlelight vigils, and wreath-laying ceremonies were held in various cities, with families of the deceased and serving security personnel participating in solemn gatherings.
“Their bravery and sacrifice will forever inspire future generations,” said a senior defence official during a tribute event in New Delhi.
The anniversary of the Pulwama attack is also observed nationally as a “Black Day” to condemn terrorism and reaffirm the resolve to fight extremism.
February 14 has since become a date of reflection on the ongoing challenges of militancy and the importance of robust security and intelligence efforts to protect the nation’s defenders.
In the days following the 2019 attack, the Indian government responded with decisive military and diplomatic actions.
One of the most significant responses was the Balakot airstrike on February 26, 2019, carried out by the Indian Air Force in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province against JeM training camps.
The operation, aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure and deterring future cross-border terrorism, underscored India’s strategic resolve.
The attack and its aftermath highlighted long-standing tensions in the region and renewed debates over counter-terrorism preparedness, border security, and regional stability.
While India has since stepped up intelligence coordination and force deployment in vulnerable areas, security agencies continue to remain vigilant against evolving threats.
For the families of the brave CRPF personnel who were killed, the pain of loss remains profound. Many continue to recount memories of loved ones lost too soon, fathers, brothers, sons, and friends whose commitment to duty cost them their lives.
National leaders and fellow citizens reaffirmed their support for these families, emphasizing that the nation stands with them in gratitude and remembrance.
As India observes the seventh anniversary of the Pulwama attack, the collective consciousness of the country is once again drawn to the sacrifices of its security forces, a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against terror and the unyielding spirit of those who defend the nation.
