Mumbai: A Porsche was left severely damaged and its driver seriously injured following a high-speed crash on Mumbai’s Western Express Highway late on Wednesday night. The car allegedly collided with a central divider while racing a BMW, according to eyewitness reports.
The incident occurred near Gundawali Metro Station around 2:30 am. While the driver of the Porsche sustained serious injuries, no fatalities have been reported. Visuals from the scene show a badly mangled blue Porsche, suggesting the force of the impact.
An eyewitness claimed that both the Porsche and the BMW were engaged in a street race moments before the Porsche lost control and slammed into the divider. Police are yet to confirm whether racing was involved. Further investigation is underway, and more details are expected.
The accident has drawn comparisons to a similar and widely publicised case in Pune in May 2024, when a Porsche driven by a teenager in an allegedly intoxicated state hit and killed two IT professionals in Kalyani Nagar. The minor was granted bail under controversial terms by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), which included writing a 300-word essay on road safety, a decision that sparked national outrage.
The incident led the Women and Child Development Department to launch an inquiry into the conduct of the JJB members. A 900-page chargesheet was later filed by Pune police against seven individuals, including the juvenile’s parents.
The latest crash in Mumbai has reignited concerns over reckless driving involving high-end vehicles and potential lapses in road safety enforcement.
