Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Russia on Monday, his first since the country invaded Ukraine, a move that has strained the historically-strong ties between New Delhi and Moscow. PM Modi's visit comes as Russia faces international isolation and sanctions, which have led to increased trade with India, now a key buyer of Russian oil.

The visit is seen as an opportunity for both countries to strengthen their relationship, with a focus on defence cooperation, trade development, and energy cooperation.

PM Modi's meeting with President Vladimir Putin will be closely watched, as India has avoided condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine, instead emphasizing the need for a peaceful settlement.

The partnership between Moscow and New Delhi has become increasingly complicated, with Russia developing closer ties with India's main rival, China.

Despite this, India remains dependent on Russia for military supplies and oil imports, and the two countries are expected to conclude a military logistics agreement to boost defense exchanges.

The visit is also seen as an opportunity for Putin to demonstrate his global influence, amid an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for actions related to the war in Ukraine.

Trade development will be a key area of discussion, with intentions to develop a maritime corridor between India's major port of Chennai and Vladivostok, Russia's Far East gateway.

India-Russia trade has seen a significant increase, reaching $65 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, driven by strong energy cooperation. India is seeking to correct the trade imbalance with Russia by increasing its exports, which include drugs, pharmaceutical products, telecom instruments, and machinery.
