New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to undertake a week-long visit to Europe starting around 18 May, in a diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening India’s trade and investment partnerships at a time of heightened global economic uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions.

The visit is expected to begin in Norway, where Modi will attend the third India-Nordic summit in Oslo. Leaders from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway are set to participate in discussions focusing on green energy, climate change, the blue economy, innovation, digital technologies and cooperation in the Arctic region. Norway, as part of the European Free Trade Association, is seen as an important partner for energy security and sustainable development cooperation.

Following the Norway visit, Modi is likely to travel to the Netherlands, where discussions are expected to focus on water management, agriculture, advanced technology and semiconductor-related collaboration. The Netherlands already hosts significant Indian investments and has emerged as a key European partner in critical technology and infrastructure sectors.

The Prime Minister’s itinerary also includes a bilateral visit to Italy, marking his first standalone bilateral trip to the country as Prime Minister. Talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are expected to centre on defence cooperation, energy partnerships and investment opportunities, along with broader engagement in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.

A potential stop at the Vatican is also being considered, which could lead to a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and the Pope, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Separately, Modi is also expected to travel to France in mid-June for the G7 Outreach Summit, continuing India’s engagement with major global economic and strategic forums.
