Modi’s birthday plans: Why 24 days of airport events and a month-long campaign?

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi turns 76 on September 17, 2026, with several government and BJP-linked programmes planned around the occasion. The events include passenger-service activities at airports, welfare initiatives and public appeals by BJP leaders.

At government-run airports, including Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, a 24-day programme called the Yatri Sewa Abhiyan is scheduled from September 17 to October 10. Airport officials said the programme will include cultural events as well as activities focused on passenger awareness, assistance and engagement.

According to airport sources, the programme was initially planned as a one-day Yatri Suvidha Diwas on September 17 before being expanded into a longer campaign. At Kolkata airport, activities are expected to include a passenger-focused ‘Sugam Yatra’, cleanliness initiatives, measures to reduce congestion and efforts to improve accessibility.

The ‘Sugam Yatra’ initiative is intended to assess whether passengers can independently navigate the airport, complete check-in procedures and reach their boarding gates using available signage and facilities. Officials have also planned measures relating to wheelchair access, parking congestion and vehicle movement near terminal arrival areas.

The programme also includes a Swachhata Diwas, with airport cleanliness receiving particular attention. Kolkata airport officials have said daily inspection and housekeeping teams have been formed to identify and record maintenance issues.

The airport programme has attracted attention because of its proximity to the Prime Minister’s birthday. However, a senior airport official told The Telegraph that it is officially being conducted as the Yatri Sewa Abhiyan, rather than being described as a birthday celebration.

Welfare programmes linked to the birthday

In Faridabad, Union Minister of State for Cooperation and local MP Krishan Pal Gurjar is scheduled to distribute electric scooters to persons with disabilities on September 17 under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

The programme is scheduled for 10.30 am and is aimed at improving mobility and supporting greater independence for beneficiaries. Earlier government information said 1,000 electric scooters were planned for distribution to people with disabilities of more than 80 per cent.

The BJP is also running a month-long Seva Sankalp Abhiyan from September 17 to October 17. The wider campaign includes activities such as blood donation and medical camps, cleanliness drives, beneficiary outreach and other public-service programmes. The campaign also coincides with the marking of Modi’s 25 years in public office, beginning with his tenure as Gujarat chief minister in 2001.

‘Lamp of Blessings’ appeal

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has asked people to light a ‘Lamp of Blessings’ at home between 6 pm and 7 pm on September 17 and pray for Modi’s long life and good health.

BJP president Nitin Nabin made a similar appeal, asking citizens to light an ‘Aashirwad ka Diya’ during the same hour. Both appeals were made in the context of Modi’s birthday and his 25-year public-service journey.

These appeals are separate from the airport’s passenger-service programme and the welfare activities being conducted under the broader Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

Why the birthday is drawing wider attention

The scale and duration of the programmes make this year’s birthday-related activities broader than a single-day observance. The BJP’s month-long campaign is linked not only to Modi’s birthday but also to his 25 years in public office, while government-linked activities in areas such as aviation and welfare are being scheduled around September 17.

The airport initiative is particularly notable because it combines ceremonial activities with attempts to address routine passenger concerns such as cleanliness, accessibility, parking and terminal congestion. At the same time, airport officials have acknowledged that some everyday maintenance problems require administrative and tender-related solutions.

The events show several different strands operating around September 17. The Seva Sankalp Abhiyan is a BJP-led nationwide campaign tied to Modi’s birthday and the completion of 25 years in public office. The Yatri Sewa Abhiyan, meanwhile, is an airport-focused passenger-service programme, although its expanded schedule coincides with the birthday.

The distinction matters because not all activities taking place around September 17 are formally part of the same campaign. The airport programme is officially presented as a passenger-service initiative, while the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan is explicitly connected to the Prime Minister’s birthday and his public-service milestone.

The combination of welfare activities, public-service programmes and symbolic appeals means Modi’s birthday will be accompanied by events at multiple levels, from individual airports and constituency programmes to a nationwide political campaign.
