New Delhi: Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput has filed a letter petition in the Supreme Court of India, urging immediate judicial intervention in the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student that took place at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata.

The plea seeks a court-monitored investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a fair, impartial, and time-bound inquiry, independent of any political influence. It further calls for immediate protection for the survivor, her family, witnesses, and legal representatives involved in the case.

Advocate Rajput has also demanded that the apex court direct authorities to implement stringent safety measures across all educational institutions. These include mandatory CCTV installations, the formation of women’s safety cells, and periodic security audits.

In a significant request, the plea seeks interim compensation of ₹50 lakh for the survivor, covering her medical treatment, rehabilitation, and legal expenses. Additionally, it appeals to the court to take action against any public representatives engaging in victim-shaming, which the plea argues undermines justice and contributes to a hostile environment for survivors.

The incident occurred on the evening of 25 June within the law college campus in Kasba, Kolkata. According to police reports, the survivor was allegedly gang-raped between 7:30 pm and 10 pm by three individuals identified as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20). All three are either former students or staff members of the college.

Kolkata Police swiftly arrested the suspects within 24 hours. Mishra and Ahmed were detained on 26 June near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing. Mukhopadhyay was apprehended later that night from his residence. Police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused for further forensic analysis.

Officials confirmed that the crime scene was secured for forensic examination. The accused were produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, where police sought their custody remand to facilitate deeper investigation.

The plea comes amid public outrage and increasing calls for institutional accountability, as the nation grapples with repeated incidents of sexual violence on academic campuses.
