New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and all state cricket associations to explain why they should not fall under the purview of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued the direction while hearing applications filed by various cricket bodies regarding the ongoing BCCI governance matter.

The apex court has been overseeing proceedings related to the BCCI's administrative structure since 2014, with multiple interlocutory applications filed over the years.

Previously, the top court appointed a committee led by former Chief Justice of India R M Lodha to propose systemic reforms, including drafting a new constitution for the national cricket governing body. The court subsequently accepted the committee's key recommendations to overhaul the BCCI's operational and organisational framework.

In September 2022, the Supreme Court permitted modifications to the BCCI constitution, allowing office bearers to serve a maximum continuous tenure of 12 years—comprising six years in a state association and six years in the BCCI—before triggering a mandatory three-year cooling-off period.

Under those modified rules, an administrator can hold a specific position for two consecutive three-year terms at either the state or national level before undergoing the required three-year break from sports administration. (PTI)
