Raju also appealed to the government for assistance in securing a permanent home, as he currently has no place to live himself

Chandigarh: As a severe cold wave continues to grip North India, making life increasingly difficult for the poor, homeless and destitute, an inspiring story of compassion has emerged from Punjab’s Pathankot district.
Raju, a man who survives on alms, has won widespread admiration after organising a blanket langar for those braving the freezing nights on the streets. Despite his own hardships, he managed to distribute nearly 500 blankets to the homeless and needy, offering much-needed relief from the biting cold.
His selfless gesture has been described as a ray of hope for people with little or no protection against the harsh winter conditions.
Raju is not new to humanitarian work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his efforts to support those in distress drew national attention, earning him praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who mentioned him in his radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
His actions stand as a reminder that compassion and kindness are not defined by wealth.
‘God Has Given Me a Duty’
Speaking to the media, Raju said he collected small donations over time—sometimes as little as ₹10—to arrange the blankets. He explained that he feels a moral responsibility to help anyone who approaches him in need.
“God keeps making things happen, and I just keep doing my work,” he said.
Raju also appealed to the government for assistance in securing a permanent home, as he currently has no place to live himself. Local residents have lauded his initiative, saying his example should inspire society to come together and support the underprivileged, especially during times of crisis.
