As Delhi prepares to ring in the New Year, the South-East District Police launched Operation Aaghat 3.0, a massive preemptive crackdown targeting criminals, gamblers, and illicit liquor peddlers. The operation, conducted on Friday, led to hundreds of arrests and extensive recoveries, according to media reports

Massive arrests and preventive action

A total of 285 people were arrested under the Excise Act, NDPS Act, and Gambling Act, while 504 individuals were detained under preventive measures. Police also apprehended 116 persons identified as habitual offenders or of “bad character”, officials said. In a wider sweep, around 1,306 individuals were rounded up to ensure law and order during the festive period.

DCP South East Hemant Tiwari described the operation as a major step in maintaining public safety and curbing criminal activities. The drive is aimed at deterring crimes during New Year celebrations and strengthening community policing.

Weapons, drugs, and cash seized

The crackdown yielded 21 country-made pistols, 20 live cartridges, and 27 knives. Police recovered 12,258 quarters of illicit liquor, 6.01 kg of cannabis, and Rs 2,30,990 in cash from gamblers. Additionally, 310 mobile phones were seized, along with 231 two-wheelers and one four-wheeler, NDTV reported.

The operation also targeted property offenders and auto theft networks. 10 property offenders and five auto-lifters were arrested, ensuring that revellers could celebrate safely.

Exchange of fire in Narela

During the operation, a brief shootout occurred in Narela, where police confronted two wanted criminals, Afzal alias Imran and Chandan alias Kaku, both identified as “bad characters.” The men opened fire at a police picket near NIT, Narela, prompting officers to retaliate and injure them. They were admitted to RHC Hospital before being referred to BSA Hospital. Seized items included two pistols, a motorcycle, mobile phones, and five empty cartridges. A case under relevant sections of the Arms Act and attempt to murder is under investigation, PTI reported.

A continuing initiative

Operation Aaghat builds on earlier drives in September and October, which targeted habitual offenders, bootleggers, and drug peddlers. Previous sweeps had recovered firearms, narcotics, and stolen property while apprehending hundreds, demonstrating Delhi Police’s commitment to public safety during the festive season, Hindustan Times reported.
