New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued more than 5 lakh FASTag-based annual toll passes within just four days, generating ₹150 crore in revenue.

Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of purchases during this period, followed by Karnataka and Haryana. Additionally, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh registered the highest number of transactions at toll plazas using these annual FASTag passes, according to a statement issued by the NHAI.

Private vehicles can now avail of this annual toll pass, which enables free passage through toll plazas on national highways and expressways. Each pass is priced at ₹3,000.

This facility is available for cars, jeeps, and vans at toll plazas operated by the NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

The pass remains valid for one year from the date of activation or for 200 toll trips—whichever comes first. Once this limit is reached, the FASTag reverts to the standard pay-per-trip model. At point-based toll plazas, each one-way crossing counts as a single trip, while a return journey counts as two. In closed or ticketed systems, a full journey from entry to exit is counted as one trip.

Certain FASTags, particularly those issued for newly purchased vehicles, may be registered only with the vehicle’s chassis number. Annual Passes cannot be activated on such tags unless they are updated to include the complete vehicle registration number.

Passes may be purchased through the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app, the NHAI or MoRTH websites, or via authorised FASTag issuer portals. The ₹3,000 fee can be paid using UPI, debit or credit card, or net banking. Notably, balances in FASTag wallets cannot be used to pay for the pass. Activation is typically completed within two hours and is confirmed via SMS.

The average toll cost for a passenger vehicle is approximately ₹50 per trip. Completing 200 trips in a year without the pass would total around ₹10,000. In contrast, the annual pass caps this cost at ₹3,000—potentially saving frequent highway users up to ₹7,000 annually.
