New Delhi: On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Keir Starmer on becoming the new Prime Minister of the UK and on the Labour Party's significant victory in the general elections. During a telephone conversation, PM Modi extended an invitation for PM Starmer to visit India soon.

The two leaders agreed to focus on the swift finalization of a mutually beneficial India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). "Both leaders recalled the historic relations between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen and advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UK," a PMO release stated.

They also acknowledged the positive contributions of the Indian community to the social, economic, and political development of the UK and agreed to foster closer people-to-people ties. Both leaders decided to stay in touch and continue working on strengthening economic relations.

PM Modi expressed his pleasure in speaking with Starmer on X, saying, "Pleased to speak with @Keir_Starmer. Congratulated him on being elected as the Prime Minister of the UK. We remain committed to deepening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and robust - economic ties for the progress and prosperity of our peoples and global good."

The Labour Party's victory marks a shift in power after 14 years of Conservative rule, with Starmer, a former barrister who entered Parliament in 2015 and became Labour leader in 2020, promising to serve all citizens and initiate immediate changes to "rebuild Britain" in his first speech from 10 Downing Street.

Previously, PM Modi had praised former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his efforts to strengthen India-UK relations. "Thank you @RishiSunak for your admirable leadership of the UK, and your active contribution to deepen the ties between India and the UK during your term in office. Best wishes to you and your family for the future," PM Modi had posted on X. (ANI)
