Mumbai and its neighbouring districts remained on weather watch on Friday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Warning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, forecasting moderate to intense spells of rainfall at isolated places over the next few hours.

The latest alert comes as several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region continue to grapple with waterlogging, traffic disruptions and monsoon-related incidents following days of persistent rainfall.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also cautioned residents about the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai city and its suburbs. Civic authorities further warned that gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour could accompany the showers, potentially affecting normal movement and increasing the risk of tree falls and infrastructure damage.

Authorities are keeping a close watch on tidal conditions, with a high tide of 4.28 metres expected in the afternoon. Another high tide of 3.68 metres is forecast during the early hours of Saturday. The combination of intense rainfall and high tide conditions could slow the drainage of rainwater into the sea, raising concerns about flooding in vulnerable and low-lying areas.

The fresh weather warning comes amid a series of rain-related tragedies reported from the Mumbai region in recent days.

Among the incidents under investigation is the death of a 17-year-old girl in Thane's Mumbra area on July 1. According to local residents and family members, the Class 11 student allegedly came into contact with an electric current that had spread through rainwater after an exposed wire was submerged during wet weather conditions.

Relatives of the teenager have alleged negligence and claimed that concerns regarding exposed electrical wiring had been raised earlier. Family members have demanded accountability and compensation, while police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.

The electrocution case has renewed concerns over public safety during the monsoon, particularly in areas where waterlogging and damaged infrastructure can create hazardous conditions.

The fatality adds to other weather-linked incidents reported this week. An 11-year-old boy died after a tree fell on a school bus in Chembur, while a 60-year-old man lost his life after reportedly falling into an open manhole in the Sakinaka area during heavy rain.

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall has also disrupted transport movement across the region. A truck overturned near the Kharghar Toll Plaza on the Sion-Panvel Highway, leading to significant traffic congestion and delays as authorities worked to clear the vehicle and restore normal traffic flow.

Several areas across Mumbai have reported waterlogging following repeated spells of rain, affecting commuters and slowing vehicular movement. Civic teams have been deployed to clear clogged drains, remove debris and monitor vulnerable locations.

With the IMD forecasting continued rainfall and adverse weather conditions, authorities have urged residents to stay updated on official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain and exercise caution around flooded roads, open drains and electrical installations.
