Morning commute turns fatal in Chembur as hit-and-run crash leaves one dead, two injured

A 35-year-old woman was killed, and two others were injured after a speeding car rammed into an auto-rickshaw in Mumbai’s Chembur on Monday morning, in yet another chilling hit-and-run case in the city.
The deceased has been identified as Hafiza Baba Sheikh, while the injured include 65-year-old Chandbi Hussain Sheikh and auto driver Virendrakumar Bhagwati Prasad.
According to police, the accident took place around 7:45 am near the Amar Mahal Bridge descent on the Eastern Express Highway at Postal Colony, a busy stretch witnessing heavy morning traffic.
Virendrakumar Prasad, originally from Uttar Pradesh and currently living in Govandi’s Shivajinagar area, had just picked up the two women from Bainganwadi signal.
They were headed towards a hospital in Chunabhatti when tragedy struck. As the auto climbed the Amar Mahal Bridge slope, a speeding car from behind smashed into it with such force that all three occupants suffered severe injuries.
Police rushed to the spot after receiving alerts and shifted the victims to Rajawadi Hospital. Doctors, however, declared Hafiza Sheikh dead on arrival. The other two continue to receive treatment.
Both Hafiza and Chandbi Sheikh are residents of Bainganwadi in Govandi. In a shocking turn, the driver of the car fled the scene immediately after the crash, without offering any help or informing authorities.
Based on the rickshaw driver’s complaint, Nehrunagar police have registered a case of causing death by negligence and injuring two persons.
A manhunt has been launched, with officials scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify and track down the absconding accused.
