At the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan in Tirupati, Mohan Bhagwat stated that science and dharma ultimately pursue the same truth

New Delhi: Mohan Bhagwat, head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said on Friday that there is no inherent conflict between science and dharma, asserting that both seek truth through different methods. He made these remarks while addressing the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
Bhagwat noted that dharma is often equated with religion, but he described it as the “science governing the functioning of creation.” He explained that imbalance in dharma can lead to negative consequences, and that science has historically distanced itself from dharma under the assumption that it is unrelated to scientific inquiry.

According to Bhagwat, the main difference between science and spirituality lies in methodology. Science relies on external observation, experimentation, and repeatable experiences, whereas spirituality achieves understanding through inner experience and disciplined practice. Spirituality also emphasises direct experience that can be attained by individuals, while science primarily focuses on studying and modifying matter externally. He pointed out that modern scientific research increasingly views consciousness as universal, drawing parallels with ancient Indian philosophical concepts such as Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma and Prajnanam Brahma.
Bhagwat also stressed the importance of language in education. He said Indian languages have unique terms to describe concepts of dharma and spirituality and called for efforts to teach scientific and spiritual knowledge in mother tongues. Citing Finland as an example, he said students in that country are taught in their native language up to the eighth grade, supported by specialized teacher training. He suggested that teaching in mother tongues enhances understanding and intellectual development.
On broader implications, Bhagwat stated that integrating material progress with dharmic perspectives could provide a framework for addressing global challenges. He said India should aim to combine scientific knowledge with ethical and philosophical guidance in addressing social and environmental concerns.
