New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government in response to a petition filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, seeking an increase in her monthly alimony and child maintenance allowance.

Hasin Jahan approached the apex court challenging a previous Calcutta High Court ruling that granted her ₹1.5 lakh per month for herself and ₹2.5 lakh for the care of their daughter. In her petition, Jahan argued that the amount sanctioned was insufficient to meet her and her child’s needs, given Shami’s income and standard of living.

Acting on her plea, the Supreme Court bench has asked both the West Bengal government and Shami to respond within four weeks, after which the matter will be heard again.

This latest development marks another chapter in the long-running legal dispute between Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan, whose relationship has been marred by public controversy since 2018.

Jahan has previously levelled multiple allegations against the Indian pacer, including domestic abuse and dowry harassment, which led to the filing of a criminal case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cleared Shami of any match-fixing allegations that surfaced around the same time.
