New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, congratulating him on the success of the Gaza peace plan that has led to a ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas.

“Spoke to my friend, President Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan,” Modi said in a post on X. “Also reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations. Agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks,” he added.

Modi praises Trump’s mediation efforts

The conversation came shortly after the announcement of a breakthrough ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which both sides confirmed following indirect talks in Egypt. The deal, part of Trump’s broader Middle East peace initiative, is seen as a major diplomatic achievement aimed at ending nearly two years of conflict in Gaza.

According to Hamas, the agreement will see the exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners within 72 hours of implementation. The militant group said it would release 20 surviving hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees.

Hamas said the deal “provides for an end to the war in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the entry of humanitarian aid, and a prisoner exchange.”

Hamas thanks Trump for role in agreement

The Gaza-based group also expressed gratitude to the mediators and to President Trump for brokering what it called a historic end to the conflict. In a statement, Hamas urged the United States and other mediating nations “to compel the occupation government to fully implement the obligations of the agreement and to prevent it from evading or delaying the implementation of what has been agreed upon.”

Trade talks between India and the US

Beyond the Gaza developments, Modi and Trump also reviewed ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States. Both leaders “agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks” as discussions progress.

The two countries have been working to resolve pending trade issues and explore avenues for expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in technology, energy, and defence.
