New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp critique of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during a rally in Kartar Nagar, addressing Kejriwal's controversial allegations that the BJP-led Haryana government was poisoning the Yamuna River. Modi condemned the claims as “disgusting” and politically motivated, accusing Kejriwal of attempting to stir panic in Delhi ahead of the February 5 elections.
Modi dismissed the allegations, asking rhetorically, “Are the people of Haryana different from those in Delhi? Are the relatives of Haryana residents not in Delhi? Can the people of Haryana poison the water they drink?” He further stressed that water from Haryana is consumed by Delhi’s residents, including judges and diplomats, as well as the Prime Minister himself. The accusations, Modi said, were a desperate tactic by Kejriwal to shift blame and gain political mileage.
In a direct rebuke, Modi declared, “AAPda’s corrupt actions will drown in the same Yamuna,” referring to the party’s repeated failures to address key issues such as water scarcity and the cleaning of the Yamuna River. He pointed out that Kejriwal’s promises of cleaning the river had not materialised, and the people of Delhi were no longer willing to accept excuses.
Modi also reminded the audience that AAP’s unfulfilled promises had led to a worsening water crisis in the capital, while highlighting the BJP’s track record of addressing the city’s needs. He encouraged Delhi voters to reject the “false promises and lies” of AAP and give the BJP a chance to serve them, pledging that the people of Delhi would be treated as part of his family.
The remarks came after Kejriwal’s controversial statement accusing the Haryana government of poisoning the Yamuna to create chaos in Delhi. Kejriwal had claimed that the Delhi Jal Board had successfully prevented the poisoned water from entering the city’s supply, warning of a mass tragedy had it gone undetected. The Election Commission had asked Kejriwal to provide evidence for his accusations by January 29, as the Delhi Assembly elections near.
As Delhi prepares for elections on February 5, Modi's attack on AAP’s leadership intensifies the ongoing political battle, with the BJP hoping to regain control of the capital after two consecutive terms under AAP. The results will be declared on February 8, with 699 candidates vying for the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly.
