Kolkata: In a shocking incident, a delivery boy was charred to death when a speeding private car rammed into his bike here on Wednesday.
According to a Times of India report, the incident happened while he was waiting at the traffic signal near the bridge connecting Salt Lake's AK Block with the Kestopur canal road around 4.30 pm.
Following the accident, the car allegedly dragged the bike to the roadside railing before both vehicles caught fire, police said.
The biker, identified as Soumen Mondal, was trapped after his legs got caught in the railings, preventing him from escaping. Two occupants of the car sustained injuries, with one suffering a leg fracture, while a pedestrian and another biker were also hurt.
The accident triggered a massive protest by the locals, who accused the fire brigade and police of not taking necessary action on time. As the protest turned violent with stone-pelting, police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the crash and whether the car’s fuel cylinder exploded. The protestors alleged that the cops were shooting videos of the vehicles on fire without attempting to douse the flames.
