New Delhi: India has expressed grave concern over the abduction of three Indian nationals in Mali, following a coordinated terrorist attack on a cement factory in the West African country. The incident occurred on July 1 at the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, where armed assailants stormed the premises and took the Indian workers hostage.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a strong statement on Wednesday, condemning the act and calling on the Malian government to take immediate and effective steps to ensure the "safe and expeditious" release of the hostages.

“The government of India unequivocally condemns this deplorable act of violence,” the MEA said, adding that senior ministry officials are actively monitoring developments and are in close contact with the relevant Malian authorities.

While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist outfit Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks across Mali on Tuesday, raising concerns about the group’s potential involvement.

The Indian embassy in Mali’s capital, Bamako, is working in close coordination with local law enforcement and the management of the Diamond Cement Factory. Officials are also maintaining contact with the families of the abducted individuals to provide regular updates and support.

In light of the recent escalation in violence, the MEA has advised Indian nationals in Mali to remain vigilant, exercise extreme caution, and stay connected with the Indian mission in Bamako.

Reiterating its commitment to the safety of Indian citizens abroad, the MEA assured that all possible efforts are being made to secure the early and safe return of the abducted nationals.
