The incident began on Sunday, observed as Friendship Day, when the 16-year-old left home after telling her parents she was meeting a friend at a shopping mall. When she failed to return and her mobile phone was switched off, her family discovered she had not met any friends as claimed and reported her missing to the police.
Investigators examined the teenager's call detail records and social media accounts, which led them to suspect Nirbhay alias Akash Madhav Pakhre, a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student from Thane who was living in a rented flat in Nagpur.
Police obtained the accused's phone number and contacted his family. A team from Thane then visited his home and asked his mother to call him.
According to police, the accused became alarmed after learning that officers had reached his family and allegedly forced the girl to call her parents to assure them that she was safe. Investigators used the call to narrow down their location.
Shortly afterwards, the accused placed an online order for a pizza. Police accompanied the delivery executive to the address, confirmed the location and raided the flat, rescuing the teenager and arresting the accused.
