Indian-origin Anita Anand appointed Foreign Minister as new team takes shape to deliver on 'mandate for change'

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday announced a 38-member cabinet, featuring 28 ministers and 10 Secretaries of State, tasked with delivering on his government’s ambitious mandate to reshape the country’s economic and diplomatic priorities.
Introducing his cabinet to the nation, Carney outlined key areas of focus: redefining Canada’s economic and security relationship with the United States, tackling the cost of living crisis, and strengthening the domestic economy. In a post on social media platform X, he wrote:
“Canada, meet your new Cabinet. This is a team that is empowered and expected to lead... Together, we will create a new economic and security relationship with the United States and build a stronger economy — the strongest economy in the G7.”
In another post, he reiterated the government’s mission, stating: “This new cabinet is focused, ready, and built for this moment.”
Among the most prominent figures in the new cabinet is Indian-origin MP Anita Anand, who has been appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs. A former defence and transport minister, Anand is expected to play a key role in restoring strained ties with India and managing evolving foreign policy dynamics, particularly amid ongoing global security shifts.
Maninder Sidhu, also of Indian descent, has been appointed Minister of International Trade. Their appointments reflect both the increasing representation of Canadians of South Asian origin and the government’s intent to re-engage constructively on the international stage.
Shafqat Ali takes up the role of President of the Treasury Board, while other key appointments include:
- Dominic LeBlanc – Minister responsible for Canada-US Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, and One Canadian Economy
- Chrystia Freeland – Minister of Transport and Internal Trade
- Francois-Philippe Champagne – Minister of Finance and National Revenue
- David J. McGuinty – Minister of National Defence
- Rebecca Alty – Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations
- Mandy Gull-Masty – Minister of Indigenous Services
- Gregor Robertson – Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada
- Lena Metlege Diab – Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
- Marjorie Michel – Minister of Health
- Evan Solomon – Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario
In addition to the full ministers, the cabinet is supported by 10 Secretaries of State who will provide targeted leadership within their respective ministries. Notably, Rechie Valdez serves as both Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism, and Ruby Sahota and Randeep Sarai, both of Indian heritage, have been appointed to junior ministerial roles.
The unveiling of the cabinet follows Carney’s electoral victory last month, which gave the Liberal Party a fresh mandate under his leadership. His reshuffle marks a break from the Trudeau era, reducing the size of the cabinet and signalling a shift in both personnel and policy direction.
