Today marks the 93rd birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister, who passed away in 2024, at the age of 92.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Friday, marking his 93rd birth anniversary and reflecting on the significant contributions Singh made to the nation during his long career in public service.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote: "Tributes to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. We recall his contributions to our nation during his long years in public life."

Born on September 26, 1932, Manmohan Singh was an esteemed economist who served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. He later held the position of India's Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996, where he played a key role in implementing sweeping economic reforms that garnered global recognition. Singh went on to serve as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He passed away on Dec 26, 2024, at the age of 92.
For many, Singh’s tenure is synonymous with transformative economic changes. His government introduced several landmark initiatives, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), later renamed MGNREGA, and the Right to Information Act (RTI) in 2005, both of which helped increase transparency between the government and the public.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge pays tribute
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also honoured Dr. Singh, describing him as a man of humility and wisdom who led with "quiet dignity."
In a post on X, Kharge referred to Singh as the "gentle architect of India’s economic transformation," noting that the former PM allowed his actions to speak louder than words. Kharge commended Singh’s vision of economic reforms, which not only created opportunities for the country but also built a thriving middle class and helped lift millions of families out of poverty.
"We remember the contribution of Former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh in nation-building. He was a gentle architect of India's economic transformation. A man of humility and wisdom, he carried himself with quiet dignity, letting his actions speak louder than his words. His vision of economic reforms opened new doors of opportunity, creating a thriving middle class and lifting countless families out of poverty," Kharge wrote in his post.
Kharge also highlighted Singh’s belief in fairness and inclusivity, stating that the former PM ensured that India’s growth went hand-in-hand with welfare measures that positively impacted millions.
Further praising Singh, Kharge added: "He believed deeply in fairness and inclusivity, ensuring that growth went hand in hand with compassion through welfare measures that touched the lives of millions. His leadership showed us that integrity in public life is not just possible, but powerful."
Kharge concluded his tribute by stating that Dr. Singh continues to be an enduring symbol of honesty, intellect, and selfless service, whose legacy lives on in the aspirations of a stronger and more inclusive India.
"For generations of Indians, he will remain an enduring symbol of honesty, intellect, and selfless service to the nation. His legacy will live on in the aspirations of a stronger, more inclusive India. Our humble homage on his birth anniversary," Kharge wrote.
