Imphal: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday (February 20, 2025) made a fresh appeal for the surrender of looted weapons across the state, urging individuals and groups to return them within a week. He assured that those who voluntarily comply will face no punitive action, but strict enforcement measures will follow against those who refuse.
"Your single act of returning these weapons can be a powerful gesture towards ensuring peace," Bhalla said in his statement. He emphasised that the recovery of weapons was essential for restoring normalcy in Manipur, which has faced prolonged ethnic tensions and security challenges.
The appeal comes amid continued efforts to stabilise the state, which has been under President’s Rule since December 2024 following months of unrest. Manipur has witnessed significant clashes and instances of arms looting, particularly from security establishments, exacerbating violence between communities.
The governor’s announcement aligns with broader efforts by the central government to curb insurgency and restore peace in the Northeast. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a separate statement, called on insurgents across the region to surrender and integrate into the mainstream.
Bhalla's appeal underscores the urgency of addressing armed violence in Manipur. "Returning these weapons is not just about law and order; it is about securing a peaceful future for Manipur," he added.
With the deadline in place, authorities are expected to intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts after the stipulated period. The impact of this appeal will be closely watched, as stakeholders assess whether it leads to a significant reduction in armed threats within the state.
