New Delhi: Delhi Police has filed an FIR against TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra for her "derogatory" social media comments regarding National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma. The Trinamool Congress leader had commented on a video posted on X depicting Sharma's arrival at the scene of a stampede in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Moitra subsequently deleted the post, which originally featured a man holding an umbrella walking behind the NCW chief.
Earleir, following the National Commission for Women's (NCW) legal action against TMC MP Mahua Moitra for her remarks about NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma, Moitra challenged Delhi Police to promptly enforce suo moto orders.
In a post on X, Moitra urged, "Come on Delhi Police, please take immediate action on these suo moto orders. I am in Nadia and available for arrest within the next 3 days if needed." She added defiantly, "I Can Hold My Own Umbrella."
Moitra ignited controversy by posting a derogatory comment on X in response to a video showing NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma arriving at the site of a recent stampede in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Moitra wrote, "She is too busy holding up her boss' pyjamas."
Reacting to Moitra's remarks, NCW took suo moto cognizance and described the comments as outrageous and a flagrant violation of a woman's right to dignity. They cited Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023, under which Moitra's remarks were deemed to warrant legal action.
The NCW condemned Moitra's defamatory statements, particularly criticising their timing during the NCW Chairperson's official visit to Hathras. They emphasised the need for strict legal repercussions against Moitra and formally lodged a complaint with Delhi Police. Additionally, NCW sent a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, denouncing Moitra's conduct and urging appropriate parliamentary action due to her status as a Member of Parliament. Agencies
