Mumbai: Maharashtra has become the first state in India to establish dedicated menopause clinics across government hospitals and urban health centres, aimed at supporting women’s physical and mental well-being during this critical stage of life.

Menopause is a stage when a woman’s menstrual period stops permanently, bringing several changes in their physiology, including hormonal imbalance, sleep disorders, depression and bone-related problems.

Recognising the need for focused care during this often neglected phase of women’s lives, the state government launched the initiative on January 14, coinciding with Makar Sankranti, under the guidance of Minister of State for Health Meghna Bordikar.

“Menopause is not a disease but a natural phase in a woman's life. However, women need strong physical and emotional support during this period, and these clinics have been started to ensure they receive proper advice, treatment and dignity,” Bordikar said.

Authorities noted that Maharashtra’s pioneering move is expected to serve as a model for other states.

The clinics will provide specialist medical consultations, mental health counselling, screening for bone, heart and hormonal health, alongside medicines and guidance — all under one roof.

Early feedback from women has been positive, with many expressing gratitude for the specialised healthcare support now available.
