New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which both leaders reviewed the evolving situation in West Asia and its impact on global stability.

PM Modi’s statement on the call

In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “I received a phone call from my dear friend, President Emmanuel Macron. We discussed the situation in Western Asia and agreed on the urgent need to restore security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

He added: “We will continue our close cooperation to promote peace and stability in the region and beyond.”

Both leaders stressed the urgent need to restore safety and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for energy supplies.

The issue has gained significance amid rising tensions in the region and concerns over disruptions to merchant shipping lanes.

India’s position on de-escalation

India reiterated its consistent stance that dialogue, diplomacy and de-escalation remain the only viable path forward in resolving the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Officials also highlighted continued diplomatic engagement with multiple global partners as the situation develops.

The conversation comes amid prolonged instability in West Asia, with global oil and gas markets experiencing volatility due to disruptions in maritime transit routes.

India has separately raised concerns over attacks on merchant vessels, calling for uninterrupted and secure passage for international shipping.
