Rudraprayag (Uttarakhand): Final preparations for the Kedarnath Dham helicopter pilgrimage services are now complete, with officials introducing more stringent regulations to ensure devotee safety for the 2026 season.

Starting April 22, flight operations will commence from the Guptkashi, Phata, and Sersi helipads within the Kedarnath valley. The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) has authorised eight private aviation companies to provide these services. In a move to prevent overcrowded skies and unregulated flying, the authorities have imposed a strict cap on the number of shuttle flights each operator can perform.

To manage air traffic effectively, dedicated control rooms staffed by Air Traffic Control (ATC) officials have been established at Sonprayag and Kedarnath. These units will provide pilots with real-time weather updates and flight data.

Rahul Chaubey, District Tourism and Heli Service Nodal Officer, said, "Helicopter services will begin from April 22. Helicopters from eight companies will operate from Guptkashi, Phata, and Sersi. ATC officials at Sonprayag and Kedarnath will provide live updates to pilots. A total of 24 shuttle flights each have been permitted from Guptkashi and Phata, while 32 shuttle flights have been allowed from Sersi. Strict action will be taken against any irregularities."

In addition to transport updates, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a unique eco-friendly initiative to provide 24-hour hot water to pilgrims. Using innovative geysers powered by biomass pellets made from pine needles and mule waste, the service will be available at Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) facilities in Kedarnath and Lincholi. This project aims to manage waste and reduce forest fire risks while improving pilgrim comfort.

The portals of the Kedarnath Dham are scheduled to open with traditional Vedic rituals on April 22, 2026, at 8.00 am, marking the official start of the yatra.
