Strict restrictions continue in Kashmir after protests over the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Srinagar: Strict restrictions remained in force across Kashmir for the second consecutive day following widespread protests over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Authorities intensified security measures after demonstrations across the Valley turned violent in some areas on Monday, leaving at least 14 people injured, including six security personnel.
Schools shut, internet throttled
As a precautionary measure, educational institutions were closed for two days and mobile internet speeds were throttled across the Union Territory. On Tuesday, authorities cancelled the movement of security force convoys and suspended road opening parties to prevent further escalation.
Officials said 75 rallies were held at various locations across the Kashmir Valley on Monday, while smaller demonstrations were reported from parts of the Jammu region. This marks the largest scale of protests in Kashmir since August 2019.
Security tightened in Srinagar
Security was significantly stepped up in Srinagar, with authorities sealing the iconic Ghanta Ghar at Lal Chowk. Barricades and concertina wires were placed at key intersections, and additional deployments of police and paramilitary personnel, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), were made to prevent gatherings.
Officials described the measures as precautionary steps to maintain law and order amid rising tensions.
Administration appeals for restraint
The Kashmir divisional administration appealed to residents to maintain calm and follow official advisories.
“The divisional administration acknowledges the role of all communities in maintaining peace and upholding law and order in the Valley. Citizens are advised to exercise restraint, adhere to advisories issued by the local administration and share only verified information on digital platforms,” a spokesperson said.
A 24-hour helpline (0194-2740003) has been set up for those requiring assistance.
Police also urged the public to refrain from violence and provocation, warning that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in unlawful activities or instigating unrest.
Background
