Kamal Haasan reacts to Vijay’s political plans amid Tamil Nadu election buzz, as MNM continues alliance talks with DMK.

Chennai: Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Friday addressed the media on his film and political commitments, offering a sharp response when asked about Vijay’s political plans ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief, amid ongoing discussions of a potential alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, said he was focused on his own work when questioned about Vijay possibly contesting from Perambur.
“Why do I care? I have my own work to focus on,” Kamal Haasan said, adding that he would resume film shooting only after the elections.
Kamal Haasan on films and politics balance
Referring to his upcoming film project with Rajinikanth and director Nelson Dilipkumar, Kamal noted that his immediate priority remains political engagement. “Shooting will begin only after the elections. I have my political work, and I also have to act in the film,” he said.
DMK alliance talks underway
Kamal Haasan confirmed that discussions with the DMK over seat-sharing for Tamil Nadu elections are ongoing. “I have come for that only; it's still going on. I will update you all on it,” he said.
On concerns about allies receiving fewer seats, he added that his focus was on the broader political objective. “I feel this is my duty, that it's not important what I get. But this (DMK-led alliance) is much needed for the country. That's the same reason we are continuing in DMK Alliance,” he said, signalling continued alignment with the DMK-led front.
Vijay’s political debut heats up Tamil Nadu politics
Meanwhile, Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is preparing for his electoral debut in the upcoming polls, with April 23 seen as a key date for the Tamil Nadu election campaign.
The actor has been actively holding rallies across the state, outlining his political vision and manifesto. His entry adds to Tamil Nadu’s long tradition of film stars entering politics, following figures such as M G Ramachandran, J Jayalalithaa, Vijayakanth and Udhayanidhi Stalin.

‘Jana Nayagan’ release faces uncertainty amid poll code
Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, may see a delayed release due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
Originally slated for a Pongal release, the film is awaiting certification from the CBFC. Archana Patnaik said the Election Commission of India will take a decision on the film’s release after certification.
Social media reactions pour in
Kamal Haasan’s remarks on Vijay have triggered mixed reactions on social media, with some users criticising the tone of his response, while others said it was expected given the political rivalry.
With both actors set to be on opposing sides, the Tamil Nadu elections 2026 are shaping up as a high-stakes contest blending cinema influence and political strategy.
