Khursheed Ahmad Shiekh of the Independent won the Langate seat in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, defeating the Jammu & Kashmir People's Conference's Irfan Sultan Pandithpuri by more than 1,602 votes, according to the Election Commission. Shiekh received 25,984 votes, while Pandithpuri secured 24,382 votes.
Intense Competition
The competition was intense, with 15 candidates vying for the seat, including prominent figures such as Engineer Rashid’s brother, Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh, and various candidates from different political parties. Sheikh Khurshid, contesting from Langate, faced Independent candidate Kaleemullah Lone, showcasing the diverse range of choices for voters.
Candidates and Voter Issues
Unemployment, particularly among the youth, was a pressing issue in the region. Limited economic opportunities beyond agriculture, compounded by poor infrastructure and market fluctuations, left many young people seeking jobs outside the area. Voter disenchantment became prevalent in Langate, where many felt neglected by successive governments. Security concerns due to proximity to the Line of Control further complicated the political climate, leading to disillusionment with the political process. Environmental issues, such as deforestation and climate change, also impacted livelihoods, adding to the challenges voters faced.
Historical Context
Langate has a rich electoral history, with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference dominating the seat since its establishment in 1977, winning it five times. The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party had only claimed victory once, during the 1999 by-polls. The 2024 assembly elections were particularly noteworthy due to Engineer Rashid's influence. His sons’ aggressive campaign strategies in the Lok Sabha elections set high expectations for family representation in the assembly. In previous elections, Abdul Rashid Sheikh had secured 18,172 votes (35.49% of the total) in 2014, winning by a margin of 2,505 votes.
Voter Landscape
In the last election, a total of 51,204 votes were cast, resulting in a voter turnout of 72.52%. Candidates from various parties, including the Bharatiya Sampuran Krantikari Party, Jammu and Kashmir People Conference, and Indian National Congress, engaged in this competitive race, raising the stakes for all involved.
Election Results
As per the latest Election Commission data, JKNC won 39 seats and led in 3, while Congress won 6 seats in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP secured victory in 27 seats and led in 2. The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, held on September 18, September 25, and October 1, witnessed a 63.88% voter turnout, marking the first elections since the abrogation of Article 370. Major parties, including the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and Congress as part of the INDIA alliance, contested the elections jointly, while the PDP and BJP fought independently.
