Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, a significant conversation following his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday. Abdullah is expected to hand over a resolution passed by his cabinet urging the Centre to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.

The discussions with Shah focused on key issues related to the Union Territory, particularly the early restoration of statehood. This also marked Abdullah's first visit to the national capital since assuming office last week, during which he spent nearly 30 minutes with the Home Minister, according to officials.

Recent Violence in Ganderbal
Abdullah's visit comes in the wake of a recent terror attack in the Gangangir area of Ganderbal district, where terrorists killed seven individuals, including a doctor, just three days prior. The need for urgent discussions on security and governance has been underscored by this tragedy.

The Push for Statehood Restoration
Since the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory in 2019, the police force has operated under the jurisdiction of the Union Home Ministry. In a pivotal move during his first cabinet meeting, Abdullah's administration passed a resolution urging the central government to restore Jammu and Kashmir's statehood in its original form. This restoration is considered a vital step towards initiating a healing process, reinstating constitutional rights, and safeguarding the unique identity of the region's residents.

Engaging with Central Leadership
During his stay in Delhi, the Chief Minister is scheduled to meet with central leadership. With the J-K Cabinet's endorsement, Abdullah has been empowered to advocate for the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood to the Prime Minister and the central government. This resolution has also received the approval of Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
