New Delhi: Indian Railways has announced an increase in passenger train fares starting December 26, 2025. The change mainly affects long-distance travellers, while daily commuters and short-distance passengers will not be impacted.
Railway officials said the decision was taken to manage rising fuel, maintenance, and operational costs, while still keeping train travel affordable for most people.
No change for daily commuters
There will be no increase in fares for suburban trains and monthly season tickets. This brings relief to lakhs of passengers who depend on local trains for daily travel.
Also, passengers travelling in ordinary class for distances up to 215 kilometres will continue to pay the same fare as before. Railways said this step ensures that short-distance and budget travellers are protected from the fare hike.
Small increase for long-distance travel
Passengers travelling longer distances will see only a very small increase in ticket prices.
Ordinary class (beyond 215 km): Fare will increase by 1 paisa per kilometre
Mail and Express non-AC trains: Fare will increase by 2 paise per kilometre
AC class (all categories): Fare will also increase by 2 paise per kilometre
According to the Railway Ministry, the previous fare hike in July 2025 has generated Rs 700 crore revenue till date.
