New Delhi: The Indian Navy sprang into action over the weekend after receiving a distress call from a merchant vessel with 14 crew members caught fire in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel, identified as MT Yi Cheng 6, reported a major blaze in its engine room and complete power failure while en route from Kandla, India, to Shinas, Oman.

According to the Indian Navy, all crew members onboard the Pulau-flagged tanker are of Indian origin. The incident occurred on June 29, prompting an immediate response from INS Taarak, an Indian Navy warship deployed in the region for maritime security operations.

“The firefighting team and equipment from #INSTabar were transferred onboard by the ship's boat and helicopter,” the Navy said in an official statement. A total of 13 naval personnel, joined by five crew members from the tanker to carry out firefighting operations, which reportedly brought the blaze under control and reduced its intensity.

No casualties have been reported so far, and efforts are ongoing to stabilise the vessel and restore essential functions.

This is not the first time the Navy has provided emergency assistance to merchant vessels in distress. It has routinely responded to calls for help.
