Large-scale drone assault on Russian capital region
Russian authorities said the overnight strike involved nearly 600 Ukrainian drones, with air defences intercepting many across multiple regions.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 81 drones targeting the capital were downed overnight.
Despite interceptions, residential buildings and infrastructure were damaged in parts of the Moscow region.
Authorities said at least four people were killed across affected areas, including three in Moscow region and one in Belgorod.
Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said a woman died in Khimki after debris struck a home, while two men were killed in Pogorelki in the Mytishchi district. Several others were injured.
Some wounded were reported near an oil refinery close to Moscow, though officials said the facility remained operational.
Cross-border strikes and official responses
The attack came days after Russian strikes on Kyiv, which Ukrainian officials said killed at least 24 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes were a response to continued Russian attacks, stating:
"Our responses to Russia's prolongation of the war and its attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified."
He also claimed Ukrainian forces hit targets more than 500 kilometres inside Russia.
The Kremlin condemned the strikes, with Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calling them a "mass terrorist attack," according to TASS.
Both sides have denied targeting civilians, while civilian areas continue to be affected in the ongoing war.
