New Delhi: India is witnessing contrasting weather patterns as winter deepens across the northern belt, while southern cities wake up to fog, mist, and mild temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has shared updates indicating continued cold waves, dense fog, and isolated heavy rainfall in some regions on December 23, 2025.

Southern cities begin the day with fog and mild temperatures

Several South Indian cities are experiencing calm but hazy mornings, mainly due to fog and mist.

Hyderabad started the day under foggy conditions, especially during early morning hours. Temperatures remain comfortable (expected to range between a low of 13°C and a high of 29°C), with cool nights and warmer afternoons.

Amaravati is seeing shallow fog, typical of winter mornings in the region (temperature expected to range between a low of 19°C and a high of 30°C), with no major weather alerts in place.

Bengaluru weather remains pleasant, marked by mist and moderate humidity. The city continues to enjoy its characteristic mild winter climate. Temperatures expected to range between 15°C and a high of 26°C

Thiruvananthapuram is witnessing partly cloudy skies with relatively high humidity, while temperatures stay on the warmer side (expected to range between 21°C and a high of 33°C).

Chennai experienced fog and mist during the morning, gradually giving way to a partly cloudy sky as the day progresses. Temperatures expected to range between 22°C and a high of 30°C.

Popular hill destinations in the south are also drawing attention. Munnar's weather remains cool and inviting, with misty mornings enhancing the winter charm, making it a favored destination for tourists.

North India faces severe cold, fog, and disruptions

Winter conditions have intensified across northern India, with dense fog and cold waves affecting daily life and travel.

The IMD has warned of severe dense fog in states like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and the Delhi-NCR region, where visibility remains extremely poor during early hours. Weather in Delhi continues to be challenging, with thick haze and severe air quality conditions persisting.

Cities such as Patna are also feeling the chill. The weather in Patna includes cold mornings and reduced visibility, adding to winter discomfort in eastern India.

The cold wave is expected to persist across large parts of North India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh over the coming days.

Cold wave and snowfall alerts in the hills

In the Himalayan region, snowfall and rain are forecast in higher altitudes. Weather in Srinagar points to cold conditions with chances of snow in the surrounding areas. Similarly, Jammu may see rain in the lower areas and snowfall in nearby hills, impacting road connectivity.

Air quality concerns continue

Delhi remains one of the most affected cities, with air quality staying in the ‘severe’ category. The toxic smog, combined with fog, has led to health advisories and travel delays, with no immediate improvement expected.
